JAY MADERA Announces New Album Backroom Blight, Out June 26 via Pop Cautious Records

Lead single “Forty Winks” arrives May 29

LOS ANGELES, CA — May 23, 2026 — indie rock singer-songwriter Jay Madera has announced his forthcoming album Backroom Blight, due out Friday, June 26, 2026 via Pop Cautious Records. The album’s lead single, “Forty Winks,” will be released Friday, May 29, marking the beginning of Madera’s most ambitious and emotionally expansive era to date.

Blending soaring alternative rock, melodic pop sensibilities, experimental textures, and introspective songwriting, Backroom Blight presents a widescreen portrait of modern emotional life — one that moves between disillusionment, longing, absurdity, hope, and catharsis with cinematic precision.

Recorded between 2023 and 2024 across multiple locations, the album was co-produced by Jay Madera and Alexandre Hirlinger, engineered by Hirlinger, with additional production and contributions by Curt Kiser, Isaac Karns, Justin Van Wagenen, Michael Ronstadt, and Meg Kesckes.

The release follows Madera’s 2021 album Anxious Armada, a project that introduced listeners to his emotionally charged songwriting and layered sonic approach. Since then, Madera has continued evolving his sound into something larger and more immersive — balancing anthemic hooks and textured arrangements with deeply reflective lyricism.

At the center of Backroom Blight is a conceptual thread exploring what it means to exist in a world defined equally by beauty and collapse. Each track acts as a different emotional episode within a larger human narrative, examining identity, anxiety, memory, emotional survival, and the fragile pursuit of meaning.

“YOU MUST BE CRAZY TO LIVE IN THIS WORLD,” Madera says of the album’s underlying philosophy.

“I was thrown into it, and so were you.”

That tension drives the emotional architecture of the record. Songs like “Healing Song,” “June,” and “Small” search for connection, transcendence, and peace amid uncertainty, while tracks such as “Another Businessman,” “Black Spot,” and “Nodding Off” confront emotional exhaustion, isolation, and the slow erosion of innocence.

“Backroom Blight knows there is beauty and also blight in this world,” Madera explains. “This album is a soundtrack to match both.”

The album’s first single, “Forty Winks,” captures one of the project’s central emotional turning points: the strange relief that arrives after prolonged fear, grief, or internal conflict finally gives way to acceptance.

“We spend hours, days, years worrying about what can float away in an instant,” Madera says. “Then the time comes when we wake up and the worry is over. Maybe we got what we wanted, maybe we didn’t. We negotiate peace with ourselves. We forgive even what we cannot name.

”Built around shimmering instrumentation, dynamic arrangements, and a slow-burning emotional release, the song embodies the album’s broader themes of transformation and emotional reckoning.

“Forty Winks encapsulates the fleeting sense of release — something we sometimes only grasp for a few seconds — and sits with it for three minutes and forty-three seconds,” Madera adds. “After ‘Forty Winks,’ hope can spring eternal.”

Though emotionally immediate, Backroom Blight was meticulously crafted behind the scenes. Each vocal layer, melody, rhythmic shift, and guitar texture was carefully developed before entering the studio, with songs undergoing extensive rehearsal and refinement prior to recording.

The result is a record that feels simultaneously raw, expansive, and explosive.
